Leaching BPA

After last week's article on the SIGG water bottles, we thought we would continue with the theme of BPA in our children's products, particularly baby bottles. Health Canada recently reported that certain brands of baby bottles and bottle liners labeled BPA-free are leaching bishpenol A (BPA).

The Health Canada study revealed that a number of non-polycarbonate baby bottles that are labeled BPA-free leached trace amounts of the chemical into their contents.

According to a recent CBC news story, brands tested that leach trace amounts of BPA include:

  • Dr. Brown's
  • Gerber
  • Medela
  • Whittlestone
  • Born Free
  • Green to Grow
  • Baby/bébé
  • Nuby
  • Adiri

Alternatives to plastic baby bottles

While we are huge advocates of breastfeeding, baby bottles are still a requirement and we respect any parent's choices for feeding. As a parent, if you want to avoid any risk of a toxic chemical like BPA leaching into your little one's milk or water, then we recommend opting for a toxin-free glass baby bottle just like our grandparents did.

Personally, we think drinking a beverage from glass tastes better than from plastic. In addition, glass baby bottles are free of BPA, phthalates, PVC, and other toxins. With all the hype concerning plastic baby bottles and BPA, glass bottles are becoming more popular and are available at all your favourite baby stores and big-box stores.

Sweet Pea baby bottles

We recently stumbled upon Sweet Pea glass baby bottles and bottle covers. The mastermind of Canadian moms, these glass bottles rate high on the cuteness factor. Setting them apart from other glass baby bottle brands are cute bottle covers made from shock absorbent neoprene, which will hopefully prevent the bottle from breaking if junior chucks it out of the buggy. Available online at www.peapodsbaby.com or for a list of retailers in Canada, visit online.

Stainless steel baby bottles

Another alternative to glass and plastic bottles are stainless steel baby bottles. Canadian company OrganicKidz is the first to produce eco-friendly stainless steel baby bottles. While we like the funky designs, we personally have not tried them. They are unbreakable, do not dent, non-leaching and free of BPA, lead, PVC and phthalates. Available at www.organicKidz.ca or to find a retailer close to you, visit their site as well.

SIGG solutions

Thanks to our great readers, we have found out that Whole Foods is allowing customers to exchange their SIGG bottles with the old liners that had BPA for the new BPA-free lined bottles. Other stores doing the same thing include Planet Organic and Amaranth Whole Foods Market in northwest Calgary.
