SIGG comes clean

Like most of you, we were pretty disappointed (to put it lightly) when Swiss company SIGG announced that the liners in their water bottles did contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), a hormone-disrupting chemical that has been banned in baby bottles by the Canadian government. We have our fair share of the SIGG bottles at home and wrote about them in the past. Needless to say, we were disgruntled when we found out about this. When we bought our first two bottles we asked if they contained BPA and we were clearly told "no."

Apparently, bottles manufactured up until August 2008 contain the old liner that has "trace amounts of BPA," and bottles manufactured after that have the new non-BPA liner. To find out if your SIGG bottle has the new or old liner, you can visit the SIGG website to check the difference.

To try to make up for their 'oops', SIGG is offering a bottle exchange program. To find out how to exchange your bottle, you can do so online. The exchange program runs until Oct. 31, 2009.

But, is that enough for angry consumers like myself? To tell you the truth, this babyvibe momma is not bothering to ship off my bottles (partly due to shipping costs) and partly due to the fact that I feel I've been mislead by a company that I trusted.

With that in mind, we've got the vibe on a local store's effort to clean up the situation.

Show them your bottles

Online store lavish & lime is offering a 30 per cent discount on their lineup of BPA-free bottles. They carry the non-leaching stainless steel reusable bottles by Thinksport and, if you are still keen on aluminum bottles with fun designs, there are Laken water bottles, which are currently the only certified BPA-free lightweight aluminum bottles. To receive the special offer, all you need to do is to e-mail lavish & lime at customerservice@lavishandlime.com with a photo of your current SIGG bottle. They will then e-mail you a special code to receive the discount.

If you are SIGG-less, but would still like to buy a BPA-free bottle, e-mail them with the subject line SIGG-LESS, and you can still save 20 per cent off their BPA-free bottles. For all the details, visit lavish & lime. You have until Sept. 22, 2009 to e-mail your photos or tell them you are SIGG-less.
