Pregnancy advent calendars

At Christmas time, children are treated to a small toy or chocolate in an advent calendar to help build excitement for the big day. Now, a group of Canadian moms are doing something similar, but the waiting and preparation is for the birth of a child.

Julaan Creations

Based in Kamloops, three women came up with a brilliant idea to celebrate the anticipation and excitement of a birth. Together they dubbed their company Julaan Creations, and this is what they created:

Pregnancy advent calendars come with a silver thread and 40 windows to open. Each week, throughout your pregnancy, you open a window that has a special message and a bead to add to the keepsake bracelet. At the end of 40 weeks, you will have a bracelet with beads and a charm. You can either wear the bracelet or keep it in your baby's baby book to symbolize the growth of your baby and your journey during pregnancy.

With the sibling advent calendar, each week your older child can open a window and see a message about how the new baby is growing. A simple and sweet message like "The baby is sleeping most of the time. It is only awake about two hours a day." Behind each window, a baby animal sticker is revealed, and it can either be placed on the calendar or somewhere special.

Why we like it

The pregnancy advent calendar is a great way to celebrate the birth of a new baby, and keep track of where you are at in your pregnancy.

We love how the sibling advent calendar helps at getting an older sibling involved in your pregnancy and prepares him or her for the transition of a new baby into the family. It is an educational and fun tool to help learn about the baby's development, and can spark many interesting conversations about that child growing inside you.

The advent calendars are whimsical and are a great symbol of the baby that is soon to become your newest addition. Whether it's for a baby shower, a treat for your child, or a special present for you from you, we think the advent calendars are a great find.

Where to find it

The advent calendars are currently available at a variety of stores in BC and Alberta. For a list of retailers, visit julaan.com. They are also available directly from the website julaan.com.
