Great winter gear

As the temperature drops, we need to bundle our wee ones up. Depending on where you live, finding the perfect winter gear can be challenging. Well, we’ve done our homework and have found some great gear for the winter season.

Polar Feet for babes

Here at babyvibe, we're huge fans of Polar Feet, a Vancouver-based company that makes the perfect gear for families who love to enjoy the winter outside. We recently received the cutest snow leopard-print fleece hat and matching thumbless mittens for a baby. Not only do the hat and mittens look adorable, they are comfortable, soft, and feature a Velcro closure under the chin. And to be honest, we really would like a set for adults. Made in Canada, the hat and mittens are available for newborns to 12 months at www.polarfeet.com. Polar Feet also makes a water- and win-resistant stroller blanket that is fun and functional, and definitely worth checking out.

MITT-ONS

Last year when the babyvibe product testing team of Marley and Kaylee hit the streets during the great snowfall of Vancouver they were excited to make snow angels and enjoy the wonders of snow. Fast forward 10 minutes and the girls’ love affair with the snow ended. Cries of cold fingers echoed through the streets of Vancouver. Their dear mittens kept falling off their little hands and when they were on, snow kept getting in. This year, however, we’re hoping for snow. The reason? We’ve got our hands on a pair of MITT-ONS. Created by Canadian Company ONS GEAR, MITT-ONS are waterproof and insulated mitts that feature a fleece sleeve to the elbow, which stops snow from getting in, keeping hands and wrists warm and dry. The best part – MITT-ONS are designed to stay on your little one’s hands and they feature a soft absorbent thumb for runny noses. Available for ages two to teen at www.onsgear.com.

Better booties

For inside and outside (for non-walkers), we love the Padraig Wool Slippers. The North Vancouver-based company creates wool slippers for newborn to adults. The wool is a natural fibre that will keep your little one’s tiny toes nice and warm while strolling inside or lounging around outside in a buggy or car seat. The slippers are made with pure New Zealand wool, are dyed and crocheted by hand, fitted with a soft sheepskin lining and have a tough leather sole. Available online at Padraig Cottage or Mountain Baby.com.

When it comes to keeping your baby's tootsies toasty, nothing fits the bill quite like Robeez booties. We recently received a pair of pink leather booties with a cuddly, fleece lining in beige. These booties are super cute, and since they are lined with a nice soft fleece, socks are optional. And, in true Robeez fashion, these booties really do stay put, making for reliable warmth and protection when baby is outside. Available online at Robeez, or at a store near you.

Socks

Next to fingers and hands, tiny toes can quickly get cold while outside in the winter elements. Having a warm pair of socks is definitely a must for a child of any age. Polar Feet also makes fleece socks that are quick drying, non-chafing and keep feet toasty warm. Available in colourful patterns, the socks are perfect for keeping tootsies warm under a pair of boots, or when cozying up inside. Made in Canada for children and adults. The children’s socks feature anti-skid soles. Available at www.lavishandlime.com. Special offer: save 15% off any sock purchase use code VIBESOCKS through Dec. 14, 2009.

Hats galore

We love hats here at babyvibe, after all, it’s partly the reason why we started this publication. During cold winters, wool hats are great at keeping your child’s head and body warm. We’ve got our eyes set on the one-of-a-kind wool hats from Lots of Knots. Handmade in Canada, the hats are rustic and finished with a felt argyle embellishment. Available online at RockyMountainKid.

Purlmama carries an adorable Little Bear Beanie with pom-pom ears, funky dots and a tie to help keep the hat stay put. Made out of 100 per cent cotton by Australian company Oobi Baby.

Just for babies

While living in Calgary a couple years ago, we found it hard to find a decent bunting suit to keep our baby warm during the super chilly winter. We would have been all over the Patagonia Synchilla Bunting. The fleece suit keeps baby warm from head to toe. Available in different animal patterns and colours for boys or girls online at RockyMountainKid.

Good to know. . .

If you are in need of snowsuits, winter boots, and more, and prefer to shop from the comfort of home, Canadian online stores RockyMountainKid, Snug As A Bug and Mountain Baby carry a great assortment of winter outerwear and accessories for babies and kids.
