What's the vibe today . . .

Best buy bras

by Melanie Osmack

Is your bra holding you back from being active? As a fitness instructor who has been pregnant or breastfeeding since 2003, I have struggled to find a sports bra that has the three necessary elements:

  1. A range of cup to band ratios
  2. Excellent support
  3. Breastfeeding-friendly

After trying more bras than my credit card would like to admit, I have finally found two amazing bras that allow me to enjoy the sports and activities I love.

The ‘Fiona’ by Moving Comfort

This bra is my dream-come-true. It fulfills all three elements. The band comes in 32-44 and the cups come in C-DD. As the brand denotes, I can move with comfort. I can even do jumping jacks with confidence. Now here’s the really exciting part: the shoulder straps adjust in the front giving easy access for breastfeeding. The ‘Fiona’ is an all round excellent sports bra. Need a smaller cup? Moving comfort has several other designs to choose from.

The Champion Double Dry Action Shape Sport Bra

My favorite while pregnant, this super supportive sports bra comes in bands 32-46 inches and cups C-DD. The back is adjustable for ribcage expansion and the no-slip straps are also adjustable. The fabric is such great quality that the straps endure being slid down the shoulder (if wearing a tank top) for breastfeeding. The cotton blend cup fabric wicks moisture away and I can run jump and dance with ease.

Both of these bras can be purchased at LadySport, 3545 West 4th Ave., in Kitsilano. They also do online sales. In Calgary, try Gord's Running Store, Running Room stores and Forzani Tech Shop.

Some Tips

  1. Don’t settle for an “okay” bra. Keep searching.
  2. Value yourself. A high quality, well-fitting sports bra is a sound investment in our health.
  3. Have a sports bra you love but can’t breastfeed in it? Sew nursing bra or swim suit clasps into the strap.
  4. Do you usually exercise is a tank top? Try sliding the strap of your sports bra down your shoulder.
  5. Avoid the “squish-feed.” Squishing your breast out of the bottom of your tight sports bra is damaging to breast tissue and can cause your milk to flow too quickly.
  6. When possible, try to breastfeed before exercise so your breasts are a little lighter.
