What's the vibe today . . .

Spruce it up

Whether you have a baby on the way, a toddler ready to make a transition to a big kid’s room, or a child heading to school in September, chances are you might be looking at ways to spruce up your child’s room. To help, we’ve got the vibe on a few fabulous sources that will help transform your child’s room into their own little sanctuary.

Off to Bed (B.C.)

Journey out to Fort Langley to find one of the sweetest stores around. It’s called Off to Bed, and this store offers a treasure trove of accessories, custom bedding and Canadian-made solid wood furnishings. You’ll be inspired once you step inside Off to Bed. It’s definitely worth making a trek out to Fort Langley. Off to Bed carries a great selection of high quality brands, including dwellbaby, doodlefish, Serena & Lily, and more.

Cherry Four (Calgary)

We’ve spent a few dollars at Cherry Four junior home store. Actually, we wish we could spend more. Hands down, this is one of our favourite stores to shop for classy and stylish items to decorate a child’s room. From babies to teens, Cherry Four carries high quality furniture, bedding, accessories and more. Cherry Four also offers design services and custom upholstered rockers and chairs just for little ones. Cherry Four is located in Inglewood at 1215a – 9th Ave. SE Calgary.

Sustainable kids decor

Saplings: Sustainable Kids Décor is a local biz committed to creating fun, healthy, eco-friendly spaces for children. Check out their online store for items such as organic cotton bedding, decor items made from recycled materials, and creations made by local artisans. Rest assured, all products at Saplings are made following the standards of Fair Trade! Very cool!

HomeWorks Etc.

One of the brands you’ll find at both Off to Bed and Saplings is HomeWorks Etc. Created by a local mom, HomeWorks Etc. creates lovely furniture and accessories for babies, toddlers, and the big kids that will undoubtedly add warmth to any room. You need not look any further when hunting for components to completely furnish and decorate your child’s room. HomeWorks offers it all. They have the most adorable products, including hook boards, step stools, growth charts, an alphabet sign (perfect for back to school), and customized name plaques, all available in various themes. Simple, soft colours and design make their mark. They also sell furniture and accessories, including children’s table and chairs sets (our favourite) and rocking horses that will make for a great family heirloom.

In addition to their designs, we love the quality of HomeWorks’ products and the reasonable price tags that are attached. Highly important to us is the fact that HomeWorks uses non-toxic and eco-friendly materials.

You can shop online at www.homeworksetc.ca, order by phone at 778-228-8073, or you can buy some of their fabulous items at Off to Bed in Fort Langley and Saplings. For a full list of retailers, visit online. By the way, check out our article on natural nurseries where, you’ll find the lowdown on non-toxic paints, chemical-free bedding and all-natural carpets.

Melissa & Doug toy recall

Health Canada has issued a recall notice of the Melissa and Doug geometric stacker. In the recall notice, Health Canada stated that the surface paint on the toy contains barium in excess of the allowable limit. About 300 of the toys were sold in Canada between February and August 2008. You are able to return the toy to any Toys “R” Us store for a full refund.
