What's the vibe today . . .
Give cloth a try
by Deb Crocker Singh
Cloth diapers are making a come back. Gone are the days of cumbersome pins, wet pails and plastic pants! Modern cloth diapering is a whole new fashion that parents are embracing with ease and a clear conscience.
Reasons to give cloth a try
- You can tell when the diaper is wet. The only way to know if your newborn baby is eating properly is wet diapers. Cloth diapers will feel wet. Single use diapers absorb liquid making it difficult to tell if baby has actually wet the diaper.
- You know the rule if you can’t pronounce it don’t eat it . . . well, if you don’t know what is in it, why would you put it on your baby’s skin?
- Cloth is the natural choice – no chemicals or gels.
- Save money, you only have to buy cloth diapers once. They’ll save you money with your first child and more with additional children.
- The environment. Every little bit counts and as parents we have an even greater stake in reducing waste, recycling and re-using. Single use diapers last a couple of hours while cloth diapers will last for three years or more!
- One less task on the errand list . . . all you have to do is wash them . . . they won’t run out and you don’t have to!
- Less diaper rash.
- Earlier potty training – some toddlers are interested in the potty sooner because in cloth they can actually feel the wetness.
- Children learn by example – make a conscience choice and handle waste responsibly.
- There have been medical reports suggesting the link of infertility in boys (due to lower sperm count) and disposable diapers.
- Modern cloth diapers are cute, stylish, fun, comfortable, environmentally friendly and cost effective!
It’s simple, by adding a couple of loads of laundry a week you can provide your baby with comfortable, fashionable and functional cloth diapers.
All you need is
- Cloth diapers
- Washing machine
- Dry diaper pail or laundry basket with a lid
Yes, it really is that simple. To launder your diapers:
- Place wet or soiled diapers in a dry diaper pail.
- Empty your pail of diapers into your washing machine. (Wash a maximum of three dozen diapers per load).
- Run a cold-water rinse cycle to help prevent stains and odours.
- Wash on HOT water with a long cycle. Use half the amount of recommended detergent. Rinse twice. (Optional: adding 1/3 cup of ‘Arm and Hammer So Clean’ to your wash helps to remove detergent residues and odours).
- Dry on medium or high heat.
DO NOT use fabric softeners; they create a film on the fibres that hinders absorption. DO NOT use chlorine bleach; use only non-chlorine bleach when necessary.
