What's the vibe today . . .

Good enough to eat

We love the fact that more and more local clothing companies are giving eco-savvy moms a greater selection of fantastic environmentally friendly baby garments. So we’re happy to share new finds.

The vibe

Fig, the children’s line by the popular Vancouver organic clothing company Twice Shy, has now put out its catalogue for Fall 2007, and the new fall items will soon be available in stores and on the company’s online shop. Like Twice Shy’s adult line, Fig clothing feature bold patterns, cotton candy-coloured pastels, and soft, cozy fabrics.

Style and ethics

We like the cuddly reversible baby blankets made of 95 per cent organic cotton. The girls hoodies, with their feminine gathered edges, are positively adorable for little ladies newborn to eight years old. And the vintage-style gathered pants for girls, with their sailor-type button fronts, completely won us over. Fig boys wear brings to mind the techno-pop chic of the turn-of-this-century’s rave fashion, featuring cargo pants, hoodies with asymmetrical zippers, and t-shirts emblazoned with stark designs of microscopes, tigers and silhouettes of sasquatches.

There’s nothing granola about these styles, yet sustainability is woven in the very fabric of Fig apparel. The company uses certified organically grown cotton from Turkey, Twice Shy’s co-founder Michael Ziff said. And the clothes are manufactured at a factory in Mexico that sticks closely to United Nations Labour Code regulations.

“It’s ironic,” Michael says. “Doing things that are good for the environment isn’t easy.” Meanwhile, he says, doing things that harm the environment is. We say kudos to local companies like this that are taking the more difficult path. We’re all better off for it.
