Monday, December 10, 2007 - B.C. and Calgary What's the vibe today . . .Creative toys To encourage creativity and imagination is one of the best gifts we can give to our children. As parents, we love to do that by proudly posting their artwork on the fridge and framing it. Children love to see their work on display. Can you imagine what their reaction will be when they see their drawings come to life? Child’s Own Wendy, a talented and creative Vancouver mom, works her magic by hand to transform your children’s drawings of their favourite animal, person or character into a soft toy. She started the concept and business, Child’s Own, after looking at a chalk drawing by her four-year-old son. It was of his “signature figure drawing.” The idea came to make a doll from it. How it works All you need to do is supply your child’s drawing. Wendy then selects the fabrics, which can be cotton prints, crafter’s felt, silks, cashmere, polar fleece and more, and fills the dolls with a hypoallergenic polyester fiberfill. You can also submit a photo that will be incorporated in the doll to further personalize it. This is optional. Dolls have a pocket in the back for you to tuck in a note or a treat. Why we like it We really think this is a fabulous and meaningful idea. Here’s a great unique way to create a lasting memento of your child’s artistic creativity. Transforming their beloved signature character (a dog, a person, a thingamabob) drawing into a toy not only encourages them to create but gives them a sense of pride. After all, knowing that their new favourite soft toy was drawn by them is something to truly boast about. We recently had Babyvibe product tester Chloe, six, submit a drawing that she drew for her dad of herself. The result was a beautiful doll, just like her drawing. Wendy managed to capture every magical quality that was in Chloe’s figure. Where to find it Child’s Own will ship throughout North America and overseas. Visit their website at www.childsown.com. While you are there be sure to check out their gallery of fun creations. Child’s Own targets children aged three to six or when they are producing drawings of recognizable people or animals. |
