Beat the heat in style

While many of us may be hitting air-conditioned malls and searching for shady spots to curb the scorching temperatures these days, Babyvibe thought we should share some readers’ favourite tools to help beat the heat and have a safe and fun summer season. On a side note, the best thing about buying summer clothing and gear lately: sales are in full swing.

Sizzling shades

Made by Julbo, the looping, reversible and 100-per cent UV protective sunglasses are easy to wear – there’s no right or wrong way up. They don’t pinch thanks to no hinges and are seemingly unbreakable. A strap can also be added. Sunglasses, which are for little ones up to four, come in stylish colours and are available at many optometrist stores throughout the province. The protection is ultimate, but with a price tag around $40 ($25 US if purchased through their website) they can be pricey for some families. For those wanting UV protection but not the hefty price tag, Baby Banz sunglasses are a great way to go. With 100 per cent UV protection and wrap around band, these are great for babies and toddlers on the move and are available at most baby specialty stores.

Baby life vest

Babyvibe reader, Jenny H., shared the vibe on the Bijoux Baby Vest, which is dynamite thanks to the one-piece front design that ensures the baby will turn face up from a face forward position and a three-piece collar that cradles the head while the baby is floating on his or her back. Intended for babies from nine to 25 pounds, the vest is the first of its kind and makes a great addition for any boating family. Dolphin cool

Babyvibe reader Nancy P. wrote in to tell us about the Sun Smart Sun Canopy Dolphin Pool. Here’s what she had to say:

“Yesterday, I had my 9 1/2 month old in her little blow up pool. We have one by Sun Smart that has a dolphin sun canopy that attaches to the side of the pool. She was able to sit in the pool in the shade the whole time. The great thing is that Sun Smart was thinking ahead and placed Velcro tabs around the edge of the pool so you can move the sun canopy. I don't have to try and drag the pool around, full of water, to keep it out of direct sun. As the sun moves I just move the sun canopy. What a great product!!!”

Babyvibe found the Sun Canopy Dolphin Pool, which is made for tots up to 18 months, at Toys "R" Us. If you go online, the pool is on sale for $9.98. We recently paid a visit to the toy store and found that many of their inflatable pools for big kids are on sale as well.

Soaking sun hat

Speedo makes sun hats with UV protection (50+) that can be worn while swimming. The broad rim hat made out of stretchy nylon is available in blue or pink and can be found online at www.speedo.com.

Superhero sun protection

We are certain that all you cool moms have heard of the UV-protecting sun suits. Babyvibe came across a Canadian company that makes superhero sun suits for boys and girl. Donning Superman capes (the towel) and sun suits resembling superman (blue for boys and pink for girls), your little ones will definitely want to wear their suit that is 97 per cent UV protective. Tiny flip flops

When this Babyvibe mom, who lives in flip flops, came across a pair of Reef flip flops for toddlers, I couldn’t pass on a pair for my little one. They are adorable. Available locally at North Shore Girl in North Vancouver and Panda Shoes. Sizing starts in sizes 3/4 and up. The only problem: they aren’t easy for new walkers with chubby feet to maneuver around in.
